School bus driver & sedan
You are a patient person who likes working with children and enjoys driving … You have what it takes to be a school vehicle driver!
Description
School bus drivers transport children and young adults on school trips, from home to school, and from school to home.
- Transporting students in the morning, at noon, and/or at the end of the day, according to pre-determined routes and pre-established schedules
- Chartered group transportation (e.g. extracurricular trips) between daily routes, the evening or on the weekends
- Completing the daily safety inspection of the vehicle
- Completing the documents required to drive the vehicle
- Washing the buses (depending on the employer’s needs)

Required qualifications
- School bus with more than 24 passengers: Class 1 or 2 driver’s licence.
- Bus or minibus with fewer than 24 passengers: Class 4B driver’s licence.
- School sedan: Class 5 driver’s licence
**Training generally provided by the employer
Class 2 driver’s licence:
- Minimum age: 21
- Fulfill and complete the following steps:
Step 1 – Driving record Fewer than 4 demerit points ont the driving record. The driver’s licence must not have been suspended or revoked in the past 2 years. Driving experience – at least 2 years of probationary experience or with class 5. Step 2 – Medical assessment and vision test Vision test required by the SAAQ. Completion by a doctor of the “Medical examination report” form to meet the requirements of the Regulation Respecting the Health of Drivers. Step 3 – Pass the knowledge test Successful completion of the knowledge test lets you obtain the class 2 learner’s licence. This licence gives you permission to drive with an authorized guide. Step 4 – On-road learning period Prior to the class 2 practical test. The duration of the on-road learning period differs from one person to the next. It could be 20 hours if the employer holds the title of SAAQ-authorized instructor.
Step 5 – Pass the practical test Using a vehicle of the desired licence class. **Several transport companies support the candidate in completing the above procedures.

Working conditions
The work schedule varies from one company to the next, but usually ranges from Monday to Friday and is fragmented (work week varying between 20 and 40 hours).
Optional possibility to make chartered group trips on evenings and weekends.
Depending on the employer, full-time, part-time, contract, casual, or permanent positions are available.
Wages and benefits vary from one company to the next.

Specifics
Skills certificate – School bus and minibus Mandatory for anyone who wants to drive a bus or minibus used to transport schoolchildren.
To obtain a skills certificate, a person must have successfully completed and paid the fees for a 15-hour training course.
The skills certificate is valid for a period of 3 years from the date of issue.
To renew their skills certificate, the holder must have successfully completed and paid the fees for a 6-hour training course prior to its expiry.

Skills certificate – Sedan
The sedan skills card is independent from that for buses and minibuses; the candidate must therefore take a training course on driving a school sedan.To obtain a skills certificate for driving a vehicle used to transport students (school sedan), a person must have successfully completed and paid the fees for a 6-hour training course.
Unlike the bus and minibus, the skills certificate for sedans has no expiry date.
The Centre de formation en transport de Charlesbourg (CFTC) and the Centre de formation du transport routier de St-Jérôme (CFTR) are mandated by the Ministère des Transports to offer training programs for school vehicle drivers (basic and refresher courses).

According to the Education Act and the Act Respecting Private Education, any school bus driver must provide to their employer a declaration relating to their judicial record confirming that they have no judicial record related to the position of school bus driver, as well as the consent form for verification with a police force.Training – Discipline management
The driver must receive proper anti-bullying and anti-violence training. This is provided by the employer or by the school service centre.The driver is held to the same obligations as that of the guardian, supervisor, or educator. To a certain extent, their task requires them to manage discipline in the vehicle that they drive.
Brakes – F and M endorsements
At the same time as the steps to obtain the class 2 licence are completed, it is possible to take steps to obtain:- the F endorsement, which certifies that the person can drive a heavy vehicle equipped with an air brake system
- the M endorsement, which certifies that the person can drive a heavy vehicle equipped with a manual transmission
